Visit of the Minister of External Affairs to Bangkok, Thailand (16-18 August 2022) to co-chair the 9th India-Thailand Joint Commission Meeting
Dr. S. Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs (EAM) paid an official visit to Bangkok, Thailand from 16-18 August 2022 to co-chair the 9th India-Thailand Joint Commission (JCM) Meeting with HE Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand.
The JCM took place in a cordial and friendly atmosphere. The two ministers discussed a wide range of issues of common interest and reviewed progress made in various areas, including politics, defense and security, economy and trade, connectivity, culture , tourism and interpersonal relations. Ministers welcomed the ongoing activities to celebrate the historic occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Thailand. The two sides also exchanged views on regional and multilateral issues of common interest and reiterated their commitment to further strengthen the multidimensional partnership that exists between the two countries. The talks were followed by a joint press conference by the two ministers. The JCM was preceded by the Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) held on August 16, 2022, during which the two sides had detailed discussions on various areas of bilateral cooperation as well as regional and multilateral issues. .
EAM addressed and interacted with the Indian community in Thailand and spoke about the special occasion of the 75th anniversary of India’s independence which also coincided with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the India and Thailand. EAM also invited the Indian community in Thailand to actively contribute to forging strong economic and trade ties as well as cultural and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries. He also highlighted the initiatives of the Indian government aimed at facilitating the Indian diaspora and bringing it closer to India.
EAM visited HE General Prayut Chan-o-Cha, Prime Minister of Thailand, and conveyed to him personal greetings and good wishes from Prime Minister Modi. EAM also congratulated the Prime Minister of Thailand on the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Thailand and briefed him on the progress of bilateral and multilateral cooperation. They also exchanged views on key regional and global developments.
EAM and HE Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand jointly inaugurated the newly constructed Embassy Residence and Residential Complex.
EAM delivered a public lecture on “India’s Vision for the Indo-Pacific” at the prestigious Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. The conference was attended by members of Thailand’s academia, including researchers, scholars, think tanks and students. The conference was followed by questions and answers. .
During EAM’s visit to Thailand, he signed with the DPM and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand the JCM Agreed Minutes, which will guide further bilateral relations. The two ministers also witnessed the signing of (i) a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in health and medical research between the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), India and the Department of Medical Sciences ( DMS), Thailand; (ii) Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation and Collaboration in Broadcasting between Prasar Bharti, India and Thai Public Broadcasting Service of Thailand.
