Indian Foreign Minister Meenakshi Lekhi will arrive in Spain today to meet her counterpart Angelos Moreno Bau.

Today’s meeting is an opportunity for Madrid and New Delhi to strengthen their ties, as Lekhi and Bau are likely to discuss the mutual economic benefits of expanding trade. Lekhi will launch “The Beatles and India” exhibition and address participants on India’s development cooperation at the Spain-India Council Foundation, a civil society platform fostering relations between Spain and India.

In line with New Delhi’s foreign policy to increase economic cooperation with the EU, expect trade between Madrid and New Delhi to increase in the near term. As a result of today’s meeting, it is highly likely that New Delhi-Madrid will also increase their engagement in joint ventures by hosting other fairs and exhibitions in the near future, especially in the tech sectors, pharmaceuticals and medicine. In the long term, however, it is highly unlikely that India and the EU will conclude a free trade agreement despite attempts to resume negotiations. New Delhi’s neglect to comply with strict EU conditions on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and collaborating on tax evasion will hamper the development of the negotiation process.
