Opening address by the Minister of Foreign Affairs during his meeting with the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs

First of all, allow me to extend a very warm welcome to you and your delegation. And it’s really a great pleasure, it’s, I think, our fourth meeting this year.

And the fact that we keep in touch and meet regularly is in itself symbolic of the special and privileged strategic partnership that we have established between our countries.

We last met in Nur-Sultan on the sidelines of the CICA Ministerial Conference. And I think today we have the opportunity not only to discuss our bilateral relations and the world situation, but we will also participate in the first 2 + 2 meeting and of course later in the evening we will join our leaders for the annual Summit meeting. For us, the Annual Summit is of course a very unique event.

Prime Minister Modi and President Putin share a relationship of great trust. The annual Summit takes place after a two-year hiatus due to Covid. We therefore look forward to very important outcomes from the Summit.

Our partnership is indeed very special, it is very unique. And we’re very much aware that in a world of rapid geopolitical change, he’s actually been remarkably stable and strong. And I would also like to take this opportunity to stress that we are very satisfied with our bilateral relations and the state of our cooperation.

Despite the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, our Prime Minister Modi and President Putin had 2 conversations this year, they participated in the Virtual Summits of the BRICS and the SCO. And we also had a few exchanges of physical visits. The secretary of your Security Council was here, our Minister of Oil and Natural Gas had visited Russia, the Minister of Steel was there. And it has all been very, very productive. So I welcome you once again and I am very, very confident that our discussions today will be very fruitful, very productive and that we will contribute to the outcome of the Summit.
