Indian External Affairs Minister to visit Cambodia for ASEAN-related meeting

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is due to travel to Cambodia on August 3-4 to attend the ASEAN-India Ministerial Meeting in Phnom Penh where he will provide an update on the ASEAN-India partnership, Trend reports quoting ThePrint.

“External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar will visit Cambodia from 3-4 August 2022,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.

“During the visit, EAM will participate in the ASEAN-India Ministerial Meeting in Phnom Penh, an annual event that takes stock of the ASEAN-India partnership,” the ministry added.

The visit comes more than a month after India hosted the ASEAN Foreign Ministers and Secretary General for a Special ASEAN-India Foreign Ministers Meeting (SAIFMM) on June 16-17 to commemorate 30 years of ASEAN-India dialogue relations.

In recognition of this milestone, the year 2022 is celebrated as the Year of ASEAN-India Friendship, as announced by the leaders of ASEAN and India at the 18th ASEAN-India Summit in October. 2021.

The SAIFMM was co-chaired by Jaishankar and Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan.

The meeting also brought together the Foreign Ministers of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam and representatives of the Foreign Ministers of Laos, the Philippines and Thailand as well as the Secretary General of ASEAN.

Ministers reviewed the status of the ASEAN-India partnership and charted the course for the next decade. Discussions focused on the main focus areas of Covid-19 and health, trade and connectivity, as well as the implementation of the ASEAN-India Joint Statement on Cooperation on the Prospects of the ASEAN on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP).

Ministers also exchanged views on important regional and international developments and post-pandemic economic recovery. The meeting unanimously adopted the Co-Chairs’ statement. The foreign ministers and the ASEAN secretary general also called Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
