Indian External Affairs Minister to hold talks with Sri Lankan leaders today

March 28, Colombo: India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, arrived in Sri Lanka for a two-day official visit at the request of his Sri Lankan counterpart, Prof. GL Peiris.


Dr Jaishankar accompanied by three senior officials from the Ministry of External Affairs arrived at Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake last night in a special plane belonging to the Indian Air Force.

Ministers Prasanna Ranatunga, Gamini Lokuge, Johnston Fernando, Minister of State DV Chanaka and Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Gopal Baglay warmly welcomed the Indian Minister and his delegation.

Dr. Jaishankar arrived on the island to attend the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Ministerial Meeting in Colombo.

The Foreign Minister is due to meet President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and External Affairs Minister Prof. GL Peiris today.

He is also expected to meet with prominent members of the opposition, Tamil and Muslim political parties ahead of the BIMSTEC summit.

Sri Lanka is hosting the 5th Summit of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) at BMICH in Colombo from March 28-30.
