FPL and NextEra Energy Announce New Director of External Affairs for Miami-Dade County
Armando Fernandez is the Miami-Dade County External Affairs Manager for Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), a subsidiary of NextEra Energy, Inc. and one of the nation’s largest investor-owned electric utilities. . Armando is dedicated to developing and maintaining positive and lasting relationships with municipal, community and business leaders in the Miami-Dade area and advocates for projects that require public support to succeed. He has held this position since March 2022 and joined the company in 2008.
For the past 10 years, Armando has overseen government relations throughout Miami-Dade as a member of the External Affairs Business Unit. Prior to joining External Affairs, he supported FPL FiberNet, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy, as a wireless connection project manager and fiber to the cell site program manager.
Prior to joining FPL, he served as T-Mobile Wireless’ Regional Development Manager for South Florida and managed their cellular infrastructure deployment, including the launch of their Ft. Myers and County’s network. by Charlotte BTA. While at T-Mobile, he served on the E911 subcommittee reporting to the state legislature on the deployment of E911 services. Prior to Armando’s extensive work in the telecommunications industry, he served as chief of staff to Miami-Dade County Commissioner Miguel Diaz de la Portilla for seven years.
He serves on the board of the Zoo Miami Foundation and the South Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America. Armando is actively involved in his community and has volunteered for many years on several corporate service projects.
Armando holds a bachelor’s degree in public administration from Florida International University, where he graduated magna cum laude as a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and the Phi Kappa Kappa Honor Society. Born and raised in South Florida, Armando resides in Coral Gables with his wife Analia and their son Marcus.
