NEW DELHI: Foreign Minister S Jaishankar met with Bangladesh Minister of Information and Broadcasting Hasan Mahmud on Tuesday and discussed bilateral issues.

“Glad to meet the Minister of Information and Broadcasting of Bangladesh, Hasan Mahmud. Our bilateral cooperation is progressing steadily in all fields. We discussed the perceptions of the media and the public in this regard,” Jaishankar tweeted.

Mahmud is on an official visit to India.

There has been a wave of visits between the two sides in recent months despite the coronavirus pandemic.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a two-day visit to Bangladesh in March to witness events marking 50 years of the neighboring country’s liberation war.

In April, Army Chief of Staff Gen. MM Naravane paid a five-day visit to Bangladesh to explore ways to further expand defense and military cooperation.

In June, Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria visited the neighboring country.

The year 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Bangladesh and the centenary of the birth of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Like its close ties, India is also organizing a number of events to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1971 war that led to the liberation of Bangladesh.

About 93,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered in front of the joint forces of the Indian army and the “Mukti Bahini” on December 16, 1971, which paved the way for the birth of Bangladesh.
