External dependence on armaments is a matter of concern: army chief
New Delhi, July 28 (UNI) Army Chief General Manoj Pande on Thursday said external dependence on arms and ammunition was a matter of concern, but reversing this trend is rather encouraging.
He was addressing the special session on the second day of the 2nd Ammo India Military Ordnance Conference 2022.
“Our external dependence on arms and ammunition has been a cause for concern and the reversal of this trend that we are witnessing is quite encouraging,” he said.
He urged that self-sufficiency in critical defense needs is a strategic imperative now more than ever.
General Pande, while emphasizing the potential of domestic and foreign players in Indian defense production, said that Atmanirbharta does not mean isolation from the world but is self-sufficient and self-generating to promote efficiency, quality and resilience.
“It has been unequivocally stated that collaboration with overseas OEMs is intrinsic to Atmanirbhar Bharat and we have moved from a buyer-seller relationship to co-development and co-production with our overseas partners,” he added. .
He said the vision of achieving ammunition self-sufficiency requires a synergistic approach from all stakeholders.
Along with the need to turn the initiative into another success story and a win-win situation for all, he added.
General Pande said that the contemporary security environment and the changing nature of warfare require the armed forces to deal with a wide range of challenges in both conventional and sub-conventional domains.
