External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visits Male, Colombo – The New Indian Express

NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar will visit India’s maritime neighbors – the Maldives and Sri Lanka – in the next two days.

He left for the Maldives today and will be in Addu town until tomorrow. Dr Jaishankar will visit Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and hold talks with Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid.

“The EAM visit will see the signing of several agreements related to bilateral development cooperation, the inauguration/handover and launch of a number of key projects (supported by India) that would contribute to socio-development. economic impact of the Maldives and enhance its security,” according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On Monday, Dr. Jaishankar will be in Sri Lanka where he will interact with his counterpart Prof. GL Peiris. The focus will be on the Indian Neighborhood Policy first.

Jaishankar will also participate in the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) in Colombo.

The Maldives and Sri Lanka are India’s major maritime neighbors in the Indian Ocean region and hold a special place in the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘SAGAR’ and Neighborhood First.
