External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had an “in-depth discussion” with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres during which they exchanged views on the overall impact of the conflict in Ukraine as well as on the situation in Afghanistan and Myanmar.

Jaishankar arrived in New York on Wednesday evening after completing his engagements in Washington.

“A wide discussion with Antonio Guterres. Exchange of views on the overall impact of the conflict in Ukraine, in particular on food and energy security. The implications for developing countries are serious,” the minister tweeted. “I talked about the latest developments regarding Afghanistan and Myanmar. I appreciate his interest in working with India to effectively address important contemporary challenges,” he said.

Jaishankar and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh were in Washington for the 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue with their US counterparts Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. On Monday, India and the United States called on the Taliban leaders to respect the UNSC resolution which demands that Afghan territory never again be used to threaten or attack any country or to plan or finance terrorist attacks.

In a joint statement issued at the conclusion of the fourth 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue between India and the United States, ministers from both countries urged the Taliban to respect the human rights of all Afghans, including women, children and members of minority groups, and to respect freedom of movement. .
